With more than a billion people-one person in five-living in abject poverty on less than a dollar a day, the theme for the 2003 commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, marked on 17 October, is how to meet the Millenium Development Goals. Endorsed by leaders of 189 countries at he Historic Millenium Summit three years ago, the eight Goals are the blueprint for eradicating poverty and include one or more targets for reducing poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women, most by 2015.
