Isi artikelMexico's industrialization began when imports became unavailable during world war II, after the war import protection, government subsidies and a favorable taxing system were used to develop independence from the rest of the world. In the early 1970 s mexico experienced a balance of payment crisis, which was alleviated by international bank loans. However, declines in agricultural and oil prices resulted in a default on external debt obligations. Subsequently, major reforms included cuts in government expenditures, reductiong of tarriffs, renegotiation of bank debt, and seeking other markets in latin america. A free trade agreement will make mexico stronger in manufacturing and expand an already large consumer market for goods and services. All three nations will benefit from increased growth and enhanced international competitiveness.
