Abstract
This article draws on a model of change, developed in psychotherapy process research in order to examine the route by which one person, diagnosed as having vascular dementia, was able to move from a position of rejecting any notion that he had a memory problem to acknowledging his limitations and fears for the future. Although the material presented here uses a case study format, it was collected as part of the Dementia Voice Group Psychotherapy Project which involved establishing six, ten-week long psychotherapy groups for a total of 36 people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia who were living in the south-west of England. Analysis of data collected independently of the group facilitators suggested that levels of depression for participants decreased significantly during the interaction period compared to the baseline and follow-up periods (Cheston, Jones, & Gilliard, 2003).
