This changed environment must be taken into account in selecting appropriate policy tools as well as in actually formulating and implementing monetary policy. After reviewing these changes as well as the forces bringing them about, this article summarizes three important implications for contemporary monetary policy. In particular, the appropriate data to use in conducting monetary policy, the importance of a nominal anchor under a flexible exchange regime, and the significance of coordinating monetary policy among several countries are discussed.
