On January 18, 2001, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) released its final rule on the supervision of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). The rule removes a federal requirement that a physician, specifically the surgeon or anesthesiologist, must supervise nurse anesthetists delivering anesthesia to Medicare patients. The HCFA rule defers to the states on the issue of whether a CRNA must be supervised or not.
