Reflecting growing interest in moving the U. S. economic accounts toward the united nations system of national accounts (SNA), the working group on improving economic statistics headed by the chairman of the president's council of economic advisers recently recommended such a move. This article introduces the SNA and describes satellite accounts, which promise to be an important and powerful addition to that system. A satellite account for research and developemnt is presented to illustrate the general features of satellite accounts and the kinds of problems faced in implementing them statistically.
