Abstract
At the start of the 21st century, corporations are faced with an increasing resistance to firm, driven globalization by governments, stakeholders in the business environment, and civil societies. For many reasons, business is increasingly forced to manage growing social, cultural, and political challenges to the influence of corporations in society, and the strong bargaining position that firms have relative to governments and policy makers. In response to these trends in global political economy and governance, regional market frameworks for policy cooperation and stakeholder mobilization are increasing as a means to counterbalance the pervasive influence of business in capitalist and emerging market societies. Through the emergence of regional market systems such as the single market of the European Union (EU), North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and so forth, a compromise for competing business, government, and societal interests is unfolding for the 21st century. As a consequence of this phenomenon, new conceptual models and theories of economics and society are needed to understand the societal implications of rapid market liberalization and deregulation by governments, cross-border competition by firms, and the subsequent mobilization of stakeholder coalitions across nations and regions. Through these newconceptual and theoretical frameworks, the changing role and strategies of corporations and business interests in societies relative to nations and regions in the global market system will be more fully understood by scholars in the 21st century.
