Isi artikelThis paper examines the position of indonesi in facing the era of trade liberalization in ASEAN, particularly in the ASEAN free trade area (AFTA). The analysis is also focused on the strategic position of ASEAN within other regional trade blocks are economic cooperation in asia and pacific. Empirical evidence shows that the indonesian economy is more opened and integrated to the international market, shown by indonesia's export to and import from ASEAN - 5 countries increase by 16,4 percent per year and those of ASEAN - 4 countries by 22,4 percent per year. The paper then suggests that domestic policy formulation in indonesia should be compatible with the "trend" and "movement" of international market. The government might strengthen the mutual relationship with the private sector and encourage the private sector to increase the economic efficiency and to be more prepared in a tough and free -market competition.
