This paper examines and evaluates deregulation policy in financial sector. The october 1988 package (pakto 88). Emphasis is given on the achievement and impact of fund - mobilization implemented by the banking sector during the last eight year. In the macro sector, the package has resulted in a tremendous increase in the number of banking offices, annual interest rate and the amount of fund accumulation. The amount of credit delivery also increases as a result of simplification procedures in the credit policy. However, the october 1988 package has caused the amount of bad - debts to rise significantly. Consequently, a number of banks experience a significant loss, at least in the short - run. In the micro context, the bank management and stockholders have to encounter the loss brought about by the bad - debts. This will encourage the banks, however, to assess the credit application more carefully, to improve the quality of public services and to manage the financial resources more efficiently. In the long - run, these might lead to a decrease in the interest rate and a better performance of the indonesian economy.
