Isi artikelEminem, a Grammy Award and Oscar winning musician, is one of today most popular rappers. He currently lives in suburban Detroit, which is mostly populated by black residents. The fact that they speak a distinctive variety of American English will, in some ways, affect the language use in Eminem lyrics. Hence, studies to portray certain phonological, morphological, and syntactical characteristics of language use in Eminem lyrics are of paramount importance. To serve that purpose, this paper is written to elaborate the results of such a study. Nonetheless, due to writer’s limitations, the identification will only be done merely in terms of syntactical rules. For the purpose of the study, a number of Eminem lyrics from various periods of release and albums will be analyzed to reveal their syntactical rules. They will then be compared to the Standard American English. The results are expected to provide a description of the syntactic characteristics of Black Vernacular English in song lyrics.
