[Editor’s note: In many parts of the world, the intersection of biotechnology and public interest has made it a topic of importance for understanding the relationship of science and the public. Issues of genetically modified foods, pharmaceutical manufacturing and licensing, cloning, and so on, affect and are affected by individuals and societies. This special section contains four papers that explore biotechnology and the public. The section was organized and is introduced by Urs Dahinden, PhD.
