The introduction of intravenous immune serum globulin (IVIG) in the early 1980s has changed dramatically the treatment of patients with humoral immune (antibody) deficiencies. Because IVIG is a plasma-derived product, its use is not without some risk. Early intervention with IVIG in patients with antibody deficiency can alter the long-term survival and reduce the morbidity from infections.
