Isi artikel
In 1980 the harvard business review oublished a now classic article by robert hayes and william abernathy faulting modern management principles for the marked deterioration in the competitive vigor of US business. The priciples to which hayes and abernathy referred were the strict application of ROI based financial conrols, portfolio management conceots, and market driven strategies. They argued that american managers increasingly refused o bear the risks of long run innovative product / market development as a result of the pressures brought about by these principles. Some changes are evident since the publication of hayes and abernathy's article. Corporate portfolio management has fallen into disfavor with executives. Further there has been a renewed emphasis on product quality, with U.S. indutry showing more emphasis on product quality, with U.S. industry showing some movement away from a total focus on market driven behaviour. Nonetheless the competitive standing of US firms, in the world economy has deteriorated even further since 1980. Moreover, there is little to suggest that american managers gave become less pre occuppied with the short run. The problem persists and continues to grow worse for reasons suggests herein.
