Tobacco use among youth remains an epidemic problem in the United States. Despite advances over the last two decades in the areas of prevention and cessation, the onset of use remains a pediatric disease. New research has provided new strategies to prevent young people from taking up the habit, and studies suggest that cessation therapy can be as effective for youth as it is for adults. The approach to decreasing tobacco use must be comprehensive, beginning at the broadest levels and extending into the community, the school and the pediatrician’s office.
