A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that brief interventions are effective in reducing heavy drinking and its associated problems. Most of these intervention strategies are adapted from known cognitive-behavioral and motivational approaches. Pediatricians can modify these strategies to accommodate the unique developmental needs of adolescents. This article outlines a number of strategies and clinical tools that appear promising for helping adolescent substance users reduce or stop their use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
