The urine drug screen is a deceptively simple procedure that seems to inspire blind confidence in its results. It is only one part of the comprehensive evaluation of substance use by the adolescent, and one which may be wrong when the rest of the subjective and objective data disagree. Understanding the real relationships between quantitative and qualitative results, following the best procedure for obtaining a valid and helpful urine drug screen, and knowing how to interpret both positive and negative results, will maximize the utility of this procedure.
