Isi artikelSaliva buffer capacity is the buffering ability and the reneutralization of saliva pH decrease caused by glucose metabolizing bacteria. A high carbohydrate diet will influence pH and buffer capacity as acid production increased. This study conducted on male patients who came to the Dental Conservation Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry Airlangga University Surabaya which were divided into 2 groups i.e low caries (decay = 2) and high caries (decay = 6). Saliva pH measurement carried out before treatment, and after gargle using 10% sucrose solution before and after amalgam restoration. Saliva pH after 10% sucrose solution gargle were measured on the 2nd, 12 th 22nd, 32 nd , 42 nd, 52 nd and 62 nd minutes. The result of this study showed that the saliva buffer capacity of the low caries group was more effective than the high caries group. The saliva buffer capacity of low and high caries group and high caries group were more effective after restorations with amalgam than before.
