Isi artikelMutans streptococci (MS) are considered as major bacteria in human dental caries. Previous experiments reported that MS needs permanent surface to make stable colonization in human oral mouth and transmission could occur between persons. The younger the child acquired MS the higher dental caries risk of the child. The purposes of this study are to determine the initial acquisition age of child, and to examine the correlation of initial acquisition age with the erupted teeth. Samples were the isolate of MS from 19 children in range of age 1-10 months old of Pucang Sewu Community Hospital Surabaya, which taken with steril cotton bud every 3 months for 6 months. The MS isolate were taken by inoculation using mitis salivarius agar and BHI broth respectively. Identification was done by mannitol, sorbitol, esculin, melibiose and rafinose fermentation test. As the results 31.6% children acquired MS and 68.4% children remain free from MS. This study showed that the average MS initial acquisition age of children was 9,667 ± 2,25 months. The correlation was found between age of MS initial acquisition and the presence of erupted teeth. The caries risk in the subyek was predicted high, and need comprehensive prevention. Further experiment is still needed in longitudinal study.
