There is an overwhelming body of evidence indicating a need for obesity prevention and treatment programs for American youth. The disproportionate increase in obesity among black females compared with their white counterparts in the past 30 years further highlights the need for targeted and tailored interventions for the black youth. This article reviews research related to the prevention and treatment of obesity among black children and adolescents. The author also discusses the state of current research and concludes with thoughts on future direction in obesity research among youth.
