Attention by social work researchers and clinicians to empirically supported treatments is overdue. A distinction is warranted between research-supported interventions and expert consensus, in favor of the former. Social work researchers can contribute substantially to practice guidelines in the mental health arena, particularly in the areas of incorporating context and sample diversity. Caution is in order to prevent rigidity in formulating and adopting empirically supported practice guidelines.
