In the era of regional autonomy it is worth reflecting on the practice of our teaching. Have we done enough to prepare our learners to take up greater responsibilities in their own learning? Or are we just too satisfied to see them helpless without our presence in deciding what is best to do for their own sake? This article addresses the issue of autonomy in learning: its nature and advantages in enhancing learning of our learners and possible challenges in the implementation of it in teaching and learning in Indonesia. The article ends with the basic preparation teachers and learners need to do for the promotion of autonomy in learning.
