Isi artikelThis article describes catastrophic injuries in 18 American sports. The injuries occurred during fall, winter and spring sports at both high school and college levels. The injuries are documented from the past 18-year data collection period from 1982 to 2000. The article discusses head and neck injuries, eye injuries, heat intolerance, and cardiac-related sudden death associated with these 18 sports. The increased frequency of such injuries occurring in high school and college level cheerleading is noted. Guidelines for the management of spine-injured athletes are provided.
