High school and college age athletes are subject to significant social, environmental, and physical stress. Increasing numbers of high school and college aged athletes are participating in sports. This article discusses the role of sports medicine during thie critical period of development in the life of the adolescent athlete. The spots medicine physician must be ready to educate young athletes regarding ergogenic aids, heat illness, and the development of healthy life-long exercise habits while assisting in the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic overuse musculoskeletal injuries.
