Isi artikel
Behavioral symptoms are common in dementia. Although there is no US food and Drug Administration-approved indication, there are a growing number of randomized controlled trials of drug therapy to treat dementia-related agitation. In addition, numerous nonpharmacologic interventions for treating agitation in nursing home residents continue to be developed. The interventions most commonly studied in randomized controlled trials include activity and sensory therapies and staff training interventions. This article systematically reviews the literature on pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for dementia-related agitation in nursing home residents. The intent is to provide clinicians with an evidence-based guide for choosing among pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for behavioral symptoms in nursing home residents with demetia. The limitations of the available evidence and future research needs are also discussed.
