In 1998, the Higher Education Reauthorization Act amended the 1974 Family Education Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA) by awarding institutions of higher education the option to notify parents when students have violated alcohol or drug policies. For family counselors, the recent amendment created an opportunity for collaboration between parents and universities that was considered illegal in the past. A case study of a family situation is presented followed by discussions on how the new amendment helps counselors work with families who have children or family members in college.
