This paper analyzed fifteen short texts that constitute responses to obituaries sent through short message service (SMS). The obituaries were sent by the writers in Indonesian, but the responses were in Indonesian, Javanese, Arabic, and mixed language. Based on their contents, the responses were classified into seven types, namely, those (i) expressing gratitude, (ii) expressing gratitude and requiring detailed information, (iii) expressing gratitude and asking questions, (iv) expressing gratitude and saying farewell, (v) expressing gratitude and condolences, (vi) expressing condolences, and (vii) expressing gratitude, condolences, and prayers. The grammatical devices used most dominantly in these types of obituaries were ellipsis, while references (person and demonstrative), and conjunctions were rarely used. Moreover, substitution was not found in the texts. With respect to lexical devices, collocation was used very dominantly while other lexical devices such as repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, and equivalence were not used at all. In addition to the linguistic context, the physical, social, and epistemic contexts playa major role in making sense of obituaries found in SMS.
