The Republic of Indonesia is a nation-state built upon a diversity of ethnic cultures, which exist all over the Indonesian archipelago. The ethnic cultural diversity is indeed a nation's asset, as reflected in the state motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (literally means: Unity in Diversity). A lot of historical findings show that the cultural diversity can strengthen, but at the same time weaken, a country's stable life. Such a phenomenon, in essence, reflects the existence of a linkage between cultural diversity and the ever on-going process of integration. To be able to maintain the state unity in cultural diversity requires conscious intercultural as well as intracultural efforts. By so doing, mutual understanding is expected to occur among different communities. To achieve this, this paper attempts to show that a linguistic study, particularly in the area of language varieties, can playa significant role.
