This article presents a defence of the politics of recognition against its implicit and explicit 'pathologization' in contemporary 'postmodern' and 'deconstructive' ethics. The rejection of the Hegelian theory of intersubjectivity is traced through the phenomenologies of Sartre and Levinas which, it is argued, lay the ground for the construal of recognition as complicit with a logic of 'objectification' and the occlusion of difference. Against this line of reasoning, Kojève's reading of the recognition-relation is appropriated and developed along hermeneutic and dialogic lines. It is argued that this rendition of intersubjectivity can simultaneously accommodate a solidarity of mutual affirmation whilst preserving the Other as the non-identical vis-à-vis of the desiring self.
