The argumentation about the effectiveness of learning vocabulary from reading passages has been going on for long. Some language researches who believe in the input hypothesis would agree that vocabulary can be learned from reading passages incidentally. On the other hand, there are many other language researchers argue that vocabulary cannot be learned from reading passages incidentally, it should be learned consciously and apart from the text. They also suggest that various vocabulary strategies are quite effective in helping learners retain the vocabulary, and these vocabulary strategies can be applied either through a reading passage or separetely. The current study investigated two groups af students learning vocabulary with two different treatments : one group with word list and the other group with reading passages. And those two group were also taught vocabulary strategies to help them retain the target words. At the end of lesson, each group of students was given both immediate and delayed test in order to measure the percentages of target words that managed to be retained by students of each different groups. the result of the study showed that there was no significant difference between those two methods. The two methods are quite effective in helping the students learn the vocabulary. |
