Abstract
This study analyzes the transfer of pronominals, Terms of Reference, and Terms of Address from English into Indonesian in the Bible translation. The fundamental question of the study is how the translator transfers the meanings of pronominals from English into Indonesian. Since pronominals, Terms of Reference and Terms of Address are restricted contextually and do not always match between English and Indonesian, I think that translating pronominals, Terms of Reference and Terms of Address should involve several steps.
First, the translator must be able to recognize and understand the features of pronominals, Terms of Reference and Terms of Address along their meanings. Second, he has to translate the meanings as close as possible into the receptor language. Third, he has to communicate the meanings in the natural form in the receptor language. This approach is in line with the theory of dynamic equivalence, dynamic translation principles, or meaning-based translation (Nida 1982; Larson 1984; Machali 1998).
After analyzing the texts, the study has found some units of samples of pronominals, Terms of Reference and Terms of Address, which can be specified or grouped as the following: Terms of Reference consists of the first and third person pronouns singular and plural, and inclusive/exclusive 'we', and Terms of Address consists of the participants, the settings, and the functional scales.
As to the strategy to translate the pronominal meanings, the study shows that a literal translation results in an inappropriateness. The translators therefore try to understand the communication situation, the social context, and the cultural context of the texts in the source language, then transfer the meaning found into Indonesian context.
The study consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 provides the background information, outlines the purpose and the scope of the study, the significance of the study, and the research methodology. Chapter 2 is a survey of literature relating to the pronominal systems, translation, and the bible translation. This chapter examines some previous studies that have been conducted related to the requirements for making a good translation. Chapter 3 is the theoretical framework for this thesis. It contains the theories of how to classify concepts and principles in translation of pronominal into receptor language, and how to grasp Indonesian pronominal systems.
Chapter 4 contains the analysis of the translation of personal pronouns, Terms of Reference and Terms of Address into Indonesian, and the writer's alternative renderings with regards to dynamic equivalence principles and principles of the Bible translation. Chapter 6 provides conclusions and suggestion. In this chapter the writer tried to make a summary of findings found in the study that had been conducted as well as the suggestion for further works.
The textbook that I have chosen as the main source of data is Kabar Baik untuk Anda Good News for You: Perjanjian Barn Bahasa Indonesia - Bahasa Inggris. This book is the bilingual textbook for the TEV published in 1984 and the BIS published in 1998. As its commentary of the translation of English (TEV) I used A Translator's Handbook on the Gospel of John. This book is used in order to complete the way of translation of John's Gospel.
The results of the study are shown in the analysis and conclusions. First, from the analysis of the data I found that out of 878 verse on John's Gospel, about seventies units of the text are not appropriate to the Indonesian pronominal systems and its cultural context.
Based on the results of the study I would like to suggest the revision of the BIS translated in 1985 in accordance with Indonesian pronominal systems and its cultural context.
