Abstract
Knowing one or more foreign language can be both useful and fun. Knowledge of a foreign language can be useful in one's career, and it is fun in that it broadens and enriches one's life. That is the reason why so many people work hard, either compulsorily or willingly, to learn foreign languages. Technological advances in transportation, communication, and other aspects of human life are pushing the demand for second language learning further. This is particularly true in light of information technology achievement.
Development in the various approaches to teach a second language shows the intense interest learners hope to master the target language in shortest possible time. Of course, different types of learner have different priority as to what language skill matters most to them. Along the process of learning, they make errors.
Study into errors made by learners of foreign language shows that making errors is in fact helpful for the learning process. S. Pit Corder first discussed this idea in 1967, and this is followed by numerous similar researches. Elaine Tarone expands the framework of communication strategies, suggesting that efficient use of these strategies will help a learner to interact during the process of learning a second language.
In schools here, English is taught as a second language with priority, unwittingly, for students to read and write. Speaking is not a priority mainly due to the fact that school environment is not conducive for using English, but only on rare occasion do the students need to interact with foreigners, or when they travel abroad.
This thesis wishes to study how school students manage to communicate in a second language, and how these communication strategies could help to motivate them to learn English in school. The result is encouraging; use of communication strategies comes instinctively and naturally when one has to communicate with insufficient competency in the target language. In classroom teaching, conversation practice can be fun if properly conducted: This will shorten the distance between students and their teacher, hence enlighten the atmosphere to learn.
