On August 18, 1999, violence broke out on the large island of Halmahera in the Indonesian district on north Maluku, at that time still part of Maluku Province. This violence triggered large scale conflict thoughout North Maluku, which became new province in October. the violence leads to the deths of around three thousand people, the internal displacement of 250,000 people, and the destruction of approximately twenty thousand houses, places of worship, and other buildings
