Designing small interfering RNAs is facilitted by an artificial neural networks algorithm. In just a few years, small interfering RNA (siRNA) has emerged as a powerful technology to specifically knockdown genes in mamalian cells both for functional analysis and for therapeutic purposes. The success of this approach, also called RNA interference (RNAi), hinges on the affinity of an siRNA molecule for its target mRNA. Many different algorithm for designing siRNAs have been developed, but they remain of limited utility. In this issue, Hall et al, report the first artificial neural network (ANN) - based algorithm for designing siRNAs and used it to generate a library of siRNA for more than 24,000 human genome...
