Magnetic resonance imaging of fluorine labeled cells allows specific detection of cells in vivo without endogenous background signal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has transformed our ability to visualize in whole animal studies has provided new insights into the biology of cell trafficking and migration, in particular, the homing of white blood and hematopoietic cells in cancer and immunological diseases. Recent progress in the use of stem cells and progenitors to treat diseases in animal models calls for methods that can guide these experimental therapies into the clinic. In this issue, harens et al present an alternative approach to MRI cell tracking that eliminates the background signal of existing methods and may permit quantification of cell numbers...
