Isi artikelA new computational model of osmotic shock in yeast integrates biochemistry and biophysics. Living inside a semi permeable membrane has its drawbacks. Cells from all walks of live have had to develop ways to deak with rapid changes in the concentration of dissolved substances in their environment. When the concentration of solutes in the environment decreases (for example, when a yeast cell is hit by rain water), water rushes into the cell through osmosis to balance that internal and external osmosis to balance the internal and external osmotic pressure, sometimes up to the point of burstling the cell. Conversely, a rapid increase of solutes in the environment (for wxample, when a yeast cell is exposed to the sugary interior of a bruised grape) will cause water to rush out of the cell, deflating it and potentially raising intracellular concentrations to lethal levels.
