There has never been a better time to evaluate and implement methods for improving the manufacture of tissue engineered products. Tissue engineering is having difficulty transitioning from a development stage industry to one with a successful product portfolio. Currently many of the key international tissue engineering centers focus almost exclusively on the biology of tissue culture to the detriment of manufacturing and product realization issues. We argue here that developments in machine platforms and sensor technology now make it possible to automate plants and better optimize control of the manufacture of cellular products...
