Isi artikelThe bulk production of human red blood cells in culture is a first step toward an alternative source of transfusible blood. The demand for banked blood continues to outspace the supply, especially in developing countries. As tighter regulations impose increasingly stringent eligibility criteria for old donors, there is a growing interest in alternative sources of transfusible blood products. A longstanding dream in the field has been to produce fully functioning red blood cells ex vivo. In this issue, giarratana et al, describing a promising technology that permits for the first time both the extensive expansion of CD34" stem cells and their total conversion ex vivo into mature enucleated red blood cells.
