According to a new survey, US universities increased the number of licenses and options executed by over 20% between fiscal years (FY) 1001 and 2003. Conversely, the number of start ups created from such licenses dropped 17%. These trends reflect foremost the increasing expertise of university technology transfer officers in touting their technologies to buyers. Over the next few years, industry observers expect changes in both licensing strategies of drug companies and funding behaviour of venture capitalists to yield more business for univesity licensors.
