Isi artikelThe article by charles cantor and matthew nelson in your january issue (nat biotechnol 23, 21-22, 2005) highlights the technical challenges facing the application of genetic research in the clinic. We would point out that emphasis is also increasing on the societal and ethical implications of such efforts. The rapid pace of progress in such areas as pharmacogenetics, nuclear transfer and stem cell research has given rise to a diverse range of bioethical viewpoints. These divergent and often conflicting viewpoints present a significant challenge to public perception of the new technologies and to policy makers charged with formulating legislation. Several barriers, often historic have so far prevented scientist, clinicians and ethicists from interacting with each other, to the detriment of all.
