Drug development is a risky business and the final product can have serious, sometimes deadly flaws. But by focusing on fixing those flaws, companies are catapulting themselves to profitability. In its best year, the heartburn drug propulsid (cisapride, janssen pharmaceuticals, titusville, NJ, USA) hit US% 950 million in sales, while seldane (terfenadine, hoedhcst marion roussel, frankfurt, germany), as antihistamine, peaked at US$ 600 million. Both had to be pulled from the market for causing serious cardiac problems in some patients, including dozens of deaths. Pharmaceutical companies obviously try to avoid outcomes like these, but it is hard to troubleshoot something without knowing how it works...
