As the number of biologics in drug pipelines or coming off patent increases over the next five years, biomanufacturing faces several scientific, regulatory and commercial challenges. Meeting these challenges will necessitate the training and recruitment of many more researchers with skills in engineering and good manufacturing practice (GMP), improvements in technologies for protein recovery and purification and the integration of process and assay development at much earlier stages of clinical development. Contract manufactures will increasingly be found outside of europe, japan and the united states.
