Cold shock inducible vestrs enable the production of labeled proteins in bacteria for structural and functional studies. Esherichia coli is adapted to grow at body temperature. When transferred to temperatures much higher or lower than 37 celcius degree, growths slows, endogenous protein production is repressed and proteins required for adaptation to temperature stress are induced. Very early in the history of biotechnology, it was recognized that this phenomenon coud be exploited to enable efficient production of recombinant proteins in E. coli....
