Education has been considered to be tha main driving force of economic growth. This has been proved by several researchers using data of developed countries. Whether it is also true for the case of Indonesia becomes the ai of this research. Using the Cobb-Douglas and Hildebrand-Liu production functions, it is found that education has some contribution to economic growth, but this contribution is not very significant. In addition to that, the economy as a whole in the period of 1969 - 1996 experienced decreasing return to scale. These unfavourable results, should warn those incolved in educational process to take the quality of education mroe seriously.
