Humor is a good remedy for stress. Stress could have a negative impact on human beings and maniested into four symptoms : psychological, emotional, cognitive and personal. Psychoanalysis believes that humor can help someone to adapt more easily, because humor reduces his / her anxisty (Kris, 1988). Sense of humor consists of the ability to ibserve and detect something funny and the ability to create something funny. At the time this study is conducted the university of surabaya (UBAYA) is planning to decelop the quality of the education process and its graduates, including lowering dropouts and pullouts. The consequence of it is that every faculty is demanded to be involved in developing activitis, such as rearranging the curriculum, applicating an effective teaching method, offering suggestions and delivering academic consultations, all in a more intensive pace, so that the duty of the lecturers is sensed as an extra burden, culminating in distress. This study is intended to kow whether there is a correlation between sense of humor and negative work stress of lecturers. Subjects are UBAYA lectures (N = 39). Data were collected through a questionnaire and underwent a regression analysis. Results reveal no correlation between sense of humor and the negative work stress of lecturers. Factors affecting work stress, whether individually or organisasionally and the impact of humor on inappropriate situations are discussed.
