This study looks at the development of guidance & counselling training in turkey. It centers on the series of phases that turkey has gone through to develop their current undergraduate and graduate courses. Despite the efforts to evolve since the 50s, even today the turkish system can be seen as a corractive proess, a process dealing with discipline and ultimately only has worth in the special education field. Once such course is highlighter, that of cukurova university, and we are that despite a clear desire to cover as much ground as possible, much of the content of the course is surplus to requirements. This is primarily seen as a result of the course waiting to prepare students who could move into a variety of roles within the industry and the health service. There are also concerns that the theory and practice are not integrated sufficiently. The introduction of guidance and counselling into turkish schools has also suffered from misconceived perceptions by the mainstream teachers, and ill - prepared counsellors have not been able to fulfil their potential and have thus failed to gain status in the education system. A series of recommendations are subsequently made centering on the need for a clear definition amongst universities as to what should be in such programmes, the need for standardisation and monitoring form central bodies both of courses and the subsequent delivery of services in schools, and also the need to ground the affective education dimension in the standard curriculum.
