Isi artikelAnxiety as one of human emotional responses is stimulated by various causes, one of which is when someone has to undergo an operation as the only treatment for his / her disease. Allowing pre - operative patients to listen to music is one of certain ways to lower the anxiety level (Stoudenmire, 1975). According to Davis and Thaut (1989) the msot favorable kind of music chosen by the patient him / herself, will likely to lower his / her anxiety level. This study examine senile cataract patients (N - 50), aged 50 years, first time operation, not suffering from another disease. Subjects were divided into an experimental and a control group. A non - parametric, U - mann - whitney - wilcoxon rank sum statistical analysis was used to analyse the quantitative data, which are non significant for the whole physiological data (p < 0,05). Qualitative data analysis (behavioural observation shows a decline in anxiety and enhanced tranquility on the experimental group, which are not found on the control group, hence relatively maintaining a high anxiety state. These results suggest that only overt behavior is somewhat influenced by music while physiologically it's not. These facts were supported by subjective statements of the experimental group who feel more comfortable after listening to the music.
