This article explains and illustrates with a prototype system how description logics provide a means for encoding semantic relationships that can be exploited to progress toward the automatic generation or assembly of instructional experiences, how they differ from the capacities of conventional relational or object databases, and how their operations map onto some of the kinds of processes of concept acquisition targeted by instruction.
