The learning object is a technology, like so many technologies, in search of theoretical roots. In this special issue we consider practical, technological, and theoretical aspects of learning objects and attempt to broaden and deepen the discussion by including not only questions of origins, architectures, and relationships with theoretical foundations but examples of emerging best practice.
