Since the isolation of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) by Choo and co-worker in 1989, our understanding of both the virus and the consequenses of its persistence in the liver, i.e., chronic hepatitis C (CHC), has rapidly evolved. they development and use of assays for detecting HCV RNA have paralled this progress. Laboratory tests for hepatitis C fall into two categories : serological assays and molecular techniques for detection of viral particles. liver biopsy helps determine the extent of liver injury but histological changes are not sufficiently specific to esthablish a diagnosis of hepatitis C.
