Throught his journey in the divina commedia, dante the pilgrim receive guidande in a number of ways, Virgil functions as guide on severla levels, ohysically, artistically and intellectually. Eventually beatrice actively takes over this role at the end of the puragtorio, although she reveals that she has been guiding the pilgrim all along. Within the course of the purgatorio, dante the poet makes use of two sets of spiritual lebel. Dante the pilgrim must be led to his salvation as a sailor to port or a sheep to the fold. The metaphor of the sheep first appears in the purgatorio in canto III. As the pilgrim and virgil begin their ascent of the mountain.........
